Our welfare rights team offers free, confidential advice about benefits and tax credits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the local authority.
We can help with:
- what benefits or tax credits you may be entitled to, including Pension Credit
- how to make a claim
- what to do if your payment seems incorrect
- challenging a decision, including support at appeal hearings
What our advisors do
Our welfare rights advisors:
- give advice about claiming benefits such as Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Attendance Allowance, and Tax Credits
- help request a revision of an unfavourable decision
- support and represent people at tribunal appeal hearings
Claiming in time
Most benefits cannot be backdated. It’s important to claim as soon as you’re eligible.
By law, the responsibility to claim rests with the claimant or their appointee. Not knowing about a benefit is not accepted as a reason for a late claim.
Benefits can be complex, and rules often change. Different DWP departments manage different benefits, and not all staff are trained in every area. Our advisors take a broad view to help you consider all your options.
