Check whether someone has an abusive past

Part of: Domestic abuse

Contents

If you're worried that a new or current partner has a history of domestic abuse, you can ask the police to check under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, also known as Clare's Law. This is your "right to ask."

If police records show that you may be at risk, they will consider disclosing this information to you. Any disclosure will only be made if it's lawful, proportionate, and necessary to ensure your safety.

If you're worried about a friend or family member, you can also apply for a disclosure on their behalf.

How to request information under Clare's Law

You can request information from the police at the police station, by asking a patrolling officer, by calling 101, or as part of a police investigation. You can also request information under Clare's Law from Greater Manchester Police online.

Support agencies and services can also help you ask the police about Clare's Law.
