An introduction to Housing Benefit
Housing Benefit is money to help cover your rent if you’re on a low income or of state pension age.
However, most working-age people now apply for help with housing costs through Universal Credit.
You may still qualify for Housing Benefit if you:
- are a single person of state pension age
- are a couple where both of you are of state pension age
- live in supported, sheltered or temporary accommodation
You cannot claim Housing Benefit if you have £16,000 or more in savings, unless you get Pension Credit Guarantee Credit - GOV.UK.
Visit the GOV.UK website to check if you are eligible for Housing Benefit.
If you are not eligible for Housing Benefit, you may be able to apply for Universal Credit on GOV.UK.
You may also be able to get help with mortgage payments through Support for Mortgage Internet (SMI) on GOV.UK.
