Housing Benefit deductions if other adults live with you

Part of: Housing Benefit

If other adults live with you, your Housing Benefit may be reduced. This is only the case if they are non-dependants, which means they do not rely on you for care.

The amount deducted depends on their circumstances, such as their income and how many hours they work.

We won’t deduct anything if the non-dependant is:

  • under 18
  • in prison
  • a full-time student
  • normally living elsewhere

We also will not deduct anything if you or your partner:

  • are registered blind
  • receive certain benefits such as Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payment (daily living component)

For people aged 65 and over, deductions can be delayed for up to 26 weeks if a non-dependant moves in or their circumstances change.

Visit the GOV.UK website for the full list of Housing Benefit exemptions.
